This is position located at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. The Health Technician provides clinical and administrative support to a wide variety of basic ancillary services on the inpatient units.
Major Duties include:
Schedules appointments;
Assists with admission of the patient to the unit, places the patient in the room, provides gown and personal care items, takes vital signs, weights and obtains pertinent information as needed;
Performs EKG's;
Performs phlebotomy;
Performs fingersticks for glucose testing;
Performs a range of diagnostic support duties;
Makes gross and subtle visual observations of the patient's condition;
Transports patients via wheelchair, stretcher or as directed by the PCP/RN on a stat, PRN or assigned basis;
Coordinates travel and medical information acquisition;
Enters information into the patient record;
May perform treatment procedures (oxygen therapy, compresses, dressing changing, irrigating catheters, applying slings, CPR, etc.);
Performs colostomy and non-medical bladder irrigations, tube feedings;
Cares for patients receiving hyperalimentation and AV shunts;
Gives sitz baths and carefully observes and assures treatments are delivered safely; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full time, working all shifts until permanent shift is established

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to perform the duties of this position.
And, in addition to the English Language Proficiency, to qualify at the GS-6 level you must meet the following:
One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in federal service which must be close to the work of this job and has required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques to successfully perform the duties of Health Technician. Specialized experience should also include scheduling appointments, phlebotomy and EKG, taking vital signs, performing fingersticks, observing patients for gross or subtle changes, oxygen therapy, irrigating catheters, colostomy and non-bladder irrigations, tube feedings, sitz baths and responding to emergency situations.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
