My future in Djing

In the past year I really have gottin back into it. Alot of it thanks to this site and also the motivation and advice from Tony Rocca.

I know its time to finally "get with the times" First and forefront my sources will be coming from vinyl. I plan on adding a 3rd deck. I have a custom coffin that hold 3 decks coming to me when I get back...thanks Tony...

Ok, now for the technology. With my career I don't think I will ever have the time to get back into djing full fledge. I would be happy with just one club gig a month in PA, NY, or NJ... I am looking at the Pioneer Effects 1000, a sampler from Roland or Akai, and I will look at Serato, but I would still use real vinyl as much as possible. I think with Serato I wouldn't need a pair of cdj's, which I would like to just have the 3 decks going either on their own or thru Serato. Lastly a gread editing program like Sony Sound Forge to add even more, edit, remaster, and finalize the mix, this would seal the deal on an 80 minute mix that would blow some one's mind and take them thru a journey leaving them begging for more when it over. All this sounds more like production/remix set up, and for the most part, yes it will be. I always liked doing creative things, and I would like to add my own twist on everything, then use it to mix. My favorite dj Steve Lawler does this to each track he spins before his gigs, so all of his tracks have their own original twist on them. Another dj, on a different level is Dj Enferno, you guys should check out his "live remix" project: absolutely what I am looking to do. I think one of you guys put me down with Dj Enferno on a thread a while back, either way this guy is tight, and whoever let me know about him...thanks...

We'll see what happens, all this takes money and time, and dedication. If I am lucky enough to get a station which affords me the time to dedicate, the passion I have will be the drive to make this whole thing work. I already have the passion and motivation, we'l see how the rest falls into play. Hey right now its just a plan, without dreams, goals, and a plan, how can one be successful?...oh yeah money...lol...djc.

I wanted to add, I will probably sell my Pioneer DJM-700. The effects are way over rated, and I barely use them, but mainly it doens't have a rotary option...One way for Pioneer to get you to pay that extra $500 for the DJM-800...

...So I am looking at a bunch of mixers. The Rane Empath Rotary, The XONE S2, Pioneer 3000 to name a few.

Of all of them I like the simplcity of the Empath. Just 3 channels for the 3 decks, obviously Serato capable. This mixer doesn't have effects, save that for the Pioneer 1000.

But the XONE S2 is sick, but the headphone jack is in the middle of the mixer, makes no sense why they would design it this way. I can just see that cord accidentally hitting the fader or a button my accident while i am moving around or diggin in the crates for a record...

Just an idea. Anyone have any experience with these mixers, and or especially rotaries. Even though I have never used rotaries before, I feel I am meant to mix on them. My style when mixing house and trance is to use very looong mixes, I rarely do quick transitions, I may have a mix going on for 2-4 minutes sometimes.

I used the Rane MP 2016, it's a solid mixer with knobs for just about everything. It had the expander attached, but I couldn't tell what the hell it did and no one I knew could explain it to me. Until I saw DJ Bryski using it on his setup. The one thing I didn't like was the effects, through the send and receive. As far as I could tell you could only send the effects to the master and not to each individual channel, like on the Denon 500 and probably most mixers recent mixers.

I haven't used any of the ones you have displayed, but I sure would like to tryout the Allen Heath and the Pioneer.

Are you serious three decks? I hope you are not planning on doing mobile with that? Two decks alone plus the coffin case will be heavy as is so put in a third and you will have back problems. Plus you will need a roadie to assist you so there goes your earnings. Keep it simple for the road and in your home studio you can have four if you like.

Hopefully in the near future you'll be able to dedicate more time!

Yeah, "time", that will be my biggest hurdle. As long as I don't get a ship on my next tour, I will be good...

BTW, Whats up with that Dallas Cowboys logo??? Anybody but Dallas...come on...:puke:

:D:D:D

LOL Coast..well I dunno...I actually cheer more for New England...who should I cheer for?? lol
And if dj'ing is your passion than just try to make time..even if's it al ittle every day or every week! Make it happen :)

DJ-C , I know you are a purist , and 99% of ANY modern DJ's will sugest SSL & TCV - & Rane .....

And every Pro DJ I know between Philly & AC uses them.

but just check out virtual dj 6 or traktor pro / they are just as good and can work with just about any modern rig and not just Serato approved Hardware .....

although if your a turntablist I recommend SSL over VDJ since VDJ still has some slippage issues when your doing some basic beat juggling although if your not scratching at all and just doing some basic cueing it should do you good.

Yeah, the first time I was introduced to Serato I was impressed. Plus the dj brought a crate of records just for old times sake, I thought that was cool. I am not a scratch dj, but of course like all dj's I still love to throw a scratch in once in a while, I do have a decent old school rap collection. However I never plan on going the mobile route. I don't have any interest, its just not my gig, I can't play a song I don't like, never did, never will. Clubs/bars/special events like I used to do years ago is the plan.

I have been doing my research on whats still out on vinyl, and it seams that alot of underground is still available on wax. Most of the music I spin is imported anyway, and in the UK, they are still producing electronic music on vinyl.

If my ultimate dream can come true, that would be to stay "Strictly Vinyl" and never have to invest in SSL or CDJ's. So please pray for vinyl... .........we'll see what happens.......

I don't understand why you would go through all the trouble of going out and pray to fin a song in vinyl when you could do it in jamas from your computer. What type of events are you doing mobile?

Vinyl is past it's time you should go the digital route. Your songs will last longer, you will have doubles of the same songs without spending more, you will not have to lug around crates, you will have more songs at your fingertips then any vinyl DJ, you have no pops and cracks, what more do I need to say?

Right in where you quoted me states I do not plan on going mobile, its just not my gig. If I was going mobile then some form of digital would be mandatory, believe me I'm not a nut, I know this. The route I'm going, vinyl will work, it may be the last choice for most dj's, but it will always be my #1 choice. Its been around longer than any other source, since the 1800's brother, it aint going nowhere.

P.S. Them little pops and crackles give a mix character...I love em, thanks...djc.

Interesting how I hear the same thing that you said coming mostly from djs that are either:

1. newbies
2. bedroom djs
3. mobile djs
4. weaklings
5. have no clue as to sound reproduction

Almost every true professional dj still spins wax unless a certain track is unavailable.

See folks a true DJ, a true professional who cares about bringing correct sonic enjoyment to the people will ALWAYS choose the best things...not things for sake of convenience.

I have played a great deal on the best sounding large club systems ever, and until one of you do that, what I say about the superior advantage of vinyl you will never understand.

If being a mobile or even bedroom dj fits your bill...go and use the computer mp3s...if not then just to say this..a proper cut 45rpm vinyl record has no equal...period.

It's not about old school vs. new school...it about being true to the art.

True to the art? Tell that to a plumber that needs to drain a toilet using a stick that they used back in the 80's? You know what? They now have better tools for him to use. Give me a freaking break! True to the art? LOL......Tell my ex-wife that that house that was built in the 70's is better then the houses now. They might be better built but guess which one they will pick?
Stay with your Vinyls and I stay with my MP3's we will see which one will last longer..... BTW don't forget to take out your vinyls from the car they might get warped as I have forgotten my HD with a trillion songs and as good as new.

Do you know what you are saying dude? Do you know how many DJs use Macs or PCs that are in a position way better then you will ever be? DJ AM, DJ Jazzy Jeff are just a few that did or do use it. Have you seen DJ AM or DJ Jazzy Jeff in action? Do you think you can cue or load songs as fast as they can? Is that all the argument you have? That the sound is better? Well I tell you what.... I can cue faster, load faster, scratch faster, Take a trillion songs that while you are saying no to the dancers, I am loading them at a blink of an eye! So take that argument to an old man club vinyl forum cause I don't buy it. This coming from a guy who use to use it and before me my brothers were DJS back in the 70's. Maybe this mobile DJ can run laps around you so don't underestimate the peeps you don't know anything about.........

It ain't going anywhere? Well what the heck happened to all the stores around here that closed shop? What happened to all the Factories that made the Vinyls? Have fun trying to buy your song and going all around your city tring to find that new song that I had two weeks ago in an MP3! LOL....good luck.

I'm not a "top 40 dj", I'm not a mobile dj, I'm not a digital dj. I am doing it for the love bro. I already have a career. I will never have the time to get back into it full fledge, like I said, I love spinning vinyl, and if I get 1 small club gig a month I would be happy. I personally know some one who owns a decent little club on South St, he grew up to freestyle and would hire a dj for "special old school nights" who spin srictly vinyl. At the moment I have no need to go digital, I'm a basemant dj living in Kodiak Alaska for God sake...lol...If I feel the need to I will go the SSL route, thats not an option for me right now, as I don't have a need for it. I am simply spinning and recording mixes for the absolute love of the music. I want a 3rd turntable, effects machine, and sampler. Then I'll take it from there. Please read my first post. This thread is not a debate on digital vs vinyl. This thread states what I plan on doing, and throwing some ideas out. I am not asking for advice, I already know what I want. Just starting some dj convo here.

Oh yeah, vinyl sales are going up, turntable sales are going up, factories are producing more vinyl than cd's, there was just a show on TV about how its making a comeback. Vinyl sales increased 50% in 2009, from 2008. There are more records being bought now than in the 90's. If you are so into digital and the internet then you should know there are hundreds of online records shops, you have no idea whats available on vinyl do you?

no disrespect to the purists, and I know you are an acomplished DJ.... Tony

but having a Modern set up with the most techologically advanced gear is more true to the art than sticking with Pure vinyl .

in the eighties & 90ies every DJ I ever met was constantly talking about the Next best piece of gear they could get thier hands on / So I dont see why any one would discourage a Digital set up with Analog capabilities .

Best of both worlds ... if you want to mix vinyl throw on a record / wanna use TCV throw... it on ...wanna do pure digital go staight from the controller ...Just go for it

( I will say the only one I do not see any value in is the CD player why use these things ((unless its a controler & a cd player )

Vdj6 & tracktor Pro , SSL3 , Itch ,etc. do not dodge or delay / now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in the past year the settings for latency is near indistiquishable by the human ear when set up correctly.

pure fact is that NO one uses traditional vinyl other than for personal enjoyment or nastalgia.

as far as sound quality goes - there are as many records out there that are crappy pressings as there are corrupted mp3 files.

High & low quality can be found in both materials.

An artist is an Artist .....if they choose to master one Media ..thats fine ....if they master several than thats not being " UNTRUE " it gives them more tools to be creative with.

the VCI 300 is a peek, into the future of DJing

Also I know current Radio / Club ( AC Casino's ) and Mobil DJs and one international DJ .....the ALL use varouos forms of modern media ...ALL of them ...so Tony your great at your style but it has become the outlier

That woudl be me...:Banana09:

The look and feel of a record means so much to me. If records were wiped off the face of the earth than I would quit. I can never see myself doing it any other way, its just me though.

I used to carry 15 orange crate full of vinyl to shows, not too mention a 6 foot coffin. Then CDs came out, cool less weight to move around. Now, over 25 years later, I can carry my entire catalog on an ext. hard drive. SWEET!!!! I got tired of dragging my sorry ass up and down the stairs 16 times a night. My VCI-300 and I get along just fine. It can do anything I can do with vinyl, and weights a whole freaking bunch less. If turntables are your bag, have fun, loose your mind, just don't ask me to help carry anything. I've served my time in hell.....
